The 91st Academy Awards take place this Sunday February 24, at 8pm EST. Here’s a brief rundown of some of the biggest movies and nominees this award season:
The leading films are Roma and The Favourite, each with an astonishing ten nominations this year. Roma is Netflix’s first nomination for Best Picture and has already had a successful award season so far, winning Best Film at the BAFTA Film Awards. The Favourite has also been, well, a favorite at award shows with lead actress Olivia Coleman winning Best Actress at both the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs.
Black Panther makes history as the first superhero film nominated for Best Picture and has seven nominations total. Hannah Bleacher, nominated for production design in Black Panther, is the first African-American to ever be nominated in this category.
A Star is Born is nominated for eight awards, and lead actor Bradley Cooper was nominated for Best Actor, despite being snubbed for Best Director. On the other hand, Spike Lee is nominated for his first Best Director nomination for BlacKkKlansman, which was nominated for six awards in total.
Incredibles 2 is nominated for best animated feature and was a hit after its much-anticipated release 14 years after the first movie. Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse was also nominated in this category, so competition will be stiff between these two fan favorites.
Now that you know a little more about the nominees you can enjoy watching the awards this weekend and wait to see if your favorites will come out on top.
